Poetry in one look
a stanza, its devices, and the seven-point answer an appreciation always follows
Poetry Extract & Activities: what a stanza question wants
a stanza is read like a prose extract: overall sense first, then the specific detail asked
rhyme scheme questions want the pattern as letters, e.g. aabb, worked out stanza by stanza
a devices table needs the device and its exact line, either alone is half the answer
creative tasks (four to six lines, a proverb as paragraph) are marked on theme relevance, not rhyme
Poetic Appreciation: seven things it covers
About the poem: the poet's name, and the significance of the title
The theme: the central idea the poem is built around, in a sentence or two
Poetic style: free verse or a fixed form, the rhyme scheme if any, the tone taken
Devices used: the figures of speech and other devices, named, with the line each occurs in
Special features: anything that makes this poem distinct: an unusual structure, a repeated refrain
Message or values: what the poem leaves the reader with, stated directly
Your opinion: a genuine personal reaction to the poem, not a repeat of the theme
