Prose in one look
one extract, one unseen passage, and the six different things each is asked to do
Global Understanding: the extract's overall sense
read the extract once before touching a question, the gist decides which detail is worth chasing
answered from the whole extract: the central idea, the writer's point, or a fitting title
a suitable title question is common, hold the main idea in your head while you read
short and direct, worth only a couple of marks, no need to elaborate beyond what's asked
Complex Factual & Inference: two layers in one extract
a complex factual answer is in the extract, but its parts spread across lines, join them
an inferential answer is never stated outright, it asks what the extract implies
a why or what-does-this-show question is usually inferential, a what-happened question is usually factual
even an inference must trace back to something written in the extract
the paper marks these as two separate activities: Complex Factual as A2, Inference/Interpretation/Analysis as A3
Global Understanding and Complex Factual & Inference
Global Understanding
reads the extract as one whole, not line by line
answered in a word, a phrase, or one short sentence
Complex Factual & Inference
reads specific lines, joins them or reads between them
answered in a short sentence, still anchored to the extract

These notes are not a standalone PDF. CapCompass plans English chapter by chapter against your real exam dates and free hours, and when the plan reaches Prose the sheet opens inside the study block itself — at the page covering the sub-topic that block is on, with the timer still running. Revision arrives at the moment the plan says revise, instead of having to be gone looking for.
