Motion in a Straight Line in one look

one axis, three quantities, four equations

  1. Position: where you are, with sign
  2. Velocity: how fast x changes
  3. Acceleration: how fast v changes

Position, path length and displacement

  • position x: measured from a chosen origin O along the x-axis, its sign gives the side
  • path length: the total distance covered along the actual path; a scalar, never negative
  • displacement: Ī” x = x_f - x_i, the change in position, sign and all
  • |Ī” x| ≤ path length, equal only if the motion never turns back
  • a round trip: displacement zero, path length not

Moving the origin

  • positions x_i and x_f change when O moves
  • displacement x_f - x_i does not: it belongs to the motion

Velocity and speed

  • average velocity: v = Ī” x/Ī” t, the slope of the chord on x-t
  • average speed = path length/time, never less than |v|
  • shrink Ī” t to zero: the chord turns into the tangent
  • instantaneous velocity v = dx/dt, the slope of that tangent
  • instantaneous speed is |v|: over a vanishing interval, path length = |Ī” x|

How CapCompass uses this sheet

These notes are not a standalone PDF. CapCompass plans Physics chapter by chapter against your real exam dates and free hours, and when the plan reaches Motion in a Straight Line the sheet opens inside the study block itself — at the page covering the sub-topic that block is on, with the timer still running. Revision arrives at the moment the plan says revise, instead of having to be gone looking for.
