Mechanical Properties of Solids in one look

stress, strain, three moduli, and the friction that keeps two surfaces from sliding at all

Stress and strain

  • stress is the internal restoring force per unit area, N/m^2 or Pa
  • strain: change in a dimension over the original, no units
  • elastic: regains its shape and size once the force is removed
  • plastic: it does not regain its shape
  • no solid is perfectly elastic or perfectly plastic
  • quartz fibre is closest to ideal elastic, putty to ideal plastic

Three kinds of stress and strain

TypeStressStrain
Tensile or compressiveF/A along the lengthΔ L / L
ShearingF/A along the faceΔ l / l = tanθ ≈ θ
Volumepressure change Δ PΔ V / V

Shear and volume

  • shear: a force along the top face, the foot held, the angle θ
  • volume: pressure on every face alike, the size shrinks

Hooke's law

  • within the elastic limit, stress/strain is a constant
  • that constant is the modulus of elasticity
  • it is the slope of the straight part of the stress strain graph
  • it depends on the material, never on size or shape
  • a wire's stretch is in step with its load

How CapCompass uses this sheet

These notes are not a standalone PDF. CapCompass plans Physics chapter by chapter against your real exam dates and free hours, and when the plan reaches Mechanical Properties of Solids the sheet opens inside the study block itself — at the page covering the sub-topic that block is on, with the timer still running. Revision arrives at the moment the plan says revise, instead of having to be gone looking for.
