Nuclei in one look

mass turns into binding energy, and binding energy is why splitting or joining nuclei releases power

  1. Protons: atomic number, fixes which element it is
  2. Neutrons: no charge, adds mass without adding charge
  3. Nucleons: mass number, total count of protons and neutrons

Reading a nucleus

  • symbol ^A_ZX: X the element, Z protons, A nucleons
  • neutrons: N=A-Z
  • nuclear sizes in fm: 1 fm = 10^-15 m
  • atomic mass unit u: one twelfth of a carbon-12 atom
  • 1 u is equivalent to 931.5 MeV
  • nucleons are held by the strong nuclear force, not gravity or Coulomb

Isotopes, isobars, isotones

familysamedifferentexample
isotopesZN and Ahydrogen, deuterium, tritium
isobarsAZ and Ncarbon-14 and nitrogen-14
isotonesNZ and Acarbon-13 and nitrogen-14

How CapCompass uses this sheet

These notes are not a standalone PDF. CapCompass plans Physics chapter by chapter against your real exam dates and free hours, and when the plan reaches Nuclei the sheet opens inside the study block itself — at the page covering the sub-topic that block is on, with the timer still running. Revision arrives at the moment the plan says revise, instead of having to be gone looking for.
